On 25 August 2026, at about 6:15 a.m. a section of the Nyaungdon Kyun Embankment (a branch of the Ayeyarwady River) in Chaungphyar Village, Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyarwady Region, collapsed due to increased water pressure against the embankment. The damaged section, located between Embankment Mileposts 11/6 and 11/7, measured approximately 300 feet in length and 60 feet in width. In order to prevent the embankment from breaching and water from flowing into the surrounding areas, at approximately 7:30 a.m. on 7 September 2026, firefighters from Yangon Region, firefighters from Maubin District Fire Station, and firefighters and auxiliary firefighters from Nyaungdon Township Fire Station, in cooperation with relevant organizations and local residents, have been carrying out reinforcement and emergency protection measures at the damaged section. The measures include installing bamboo barriers, filling and placing sandbags, and installing supporting posts to reinforce the collapsed section of the embankment.
