On 25 August 2026, at about 6:15 a.m. a section of the Nyaungdon Kyun Embankment (an embankment along a distributary of the Ayeyarwady River) in Chaungphyar Village, Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyarwady Region, collapsed due to riverbank erosion caused by a whirlpool. The collapsed section was located between Embankment Miles 11/6 and 11/7 and measured approximately 300 feet in length and 60 feet in width. In order to prevent the embankment from breaching and to prevent water from entering the surrounding area, at approximately 7:30 a.m. on 11 September 2026, firefighters from Yangon Region, Maubin District Fire Station, and auxiliary firefighters from Nyaungdon Township Fire Station, in cooperation with the relevant organizations and local residents, have been carrying out preventive measures at the collapsed section, including installing bamboo piles, placing sandbags, and installing support posts.
